Abstract
This paper is devoted to the current problem of optimization of the layout of open storage areas for containers and general cargo of Northern Sea Route ports. A computational model aimed at maximizing storage capacity taking into account the geometric parameters of cargo units, technological aisles, and pavement load constraints is proposed. The model, implemented in the form of a spreadsheet with executable modules (macros), includes the parameters of cargo units (length, width, weight, permissible load) and is intended to optimize the placement of cargo stacks by varying the number of cargo units along the length and width of the stacks. Two layout variants of the storage area are considered: “longitudinal” (placement of cargo units with the long side along the long side of the storage site) and “transverse” (placement of cargo units with the wide side along the length of the site). Formulas for transforming arbitrary rectangular plots into a standard form for calculations are presented. Using the example of 20-foot containers, it is shown that optimal storage capacity is not always achieved with maximum stack length and width placed in the storage area, which confirms the need for precise calculations. The model is useful for the design of new and optimization of existing storage areas for general cargo and containers, especially in Northern Sea Route ports with limited infrastructure. The model has a number of limitations and simplifications (homogeneity of cargo, rectangular shape of storage area plots), which define directions for further development, including the use of polygonal plots and different types of cargo.
Based on the results of the study, conclusions are drawn regarding the effectiveness of the model and the optimality of storage area layouts.
